Ten years after Hurricane Katrina caused havoc in the United States its name is still lodged in our consciousness. Giving the storm a name gave us a way of talking about it at the time and, crucially, a way of remembering it a decade later.
Now the Met Office and Met Eireann has announced a pilot project that will allow the public to name wind storms that are set to affect the UK and Ireland in the hope it will raise awareness of impending severe weather. If the public is more aware of inclement weather, they may be more likely to heed safety guidelines, the thinking goes.
