Garry's Mod is one of the first sandbox games to really break big, allowing PC gamers to do pretty much whatever they want -- Minecraft before Minecraft, if you like. The sequel is likely to be even more ambitious though, with plans to integrate virtual reality support.
Developed by Facepunch Studios and named for creator Garry Newman, Garry's Mod lead the way when it came to community driven games development. Although it lacks any objectives, the complete freedom it offers players in designing their own worlds is central to its appeal. A similar level of independence in a follow up but with VR incorporated opens exciting possibilities for expanding the burgeoning field.
