Self-driving cars are fooled by laser 'ghosts'

If you're eagerly awaiting the days of being able to sit back and watch movies while your car self-drives to your destination, you may want to hit the brakes. A security researcher has found a simple homemade laser gadget can easily disrupt automated vehicles.

Self-driving cars such as those being pursued by Alphabet's Google X division use lidar -- light radar -- as their "eyes". In simple terms, a laser is fired and the light reflected from objects it hits is analysed, measuring distance between the vehicle and obstacles. This helps with path making and collision detection, but the systems can cost tens of thousands of pounds. Yet Jonathan Petit says he's found a way to fool them for around £40.
