Marvel's Jessica Jones on Netflix: Everything you need to know

Jessica Jones is the second Marvel series to be developed exclusively for Netflix. Following on from the success of Daredevil, the new show follows Krysten Ritter as the eponymous private detective, solving crimes in New York's grimy Hell's Kitchen district.

Unlike other sleuths though, Jones used to be a superhero -- until a traumatic event in her past forced her to hang up the costume. Now, she takes on minor cases for cash, while caught in a spiral of despair and destructive behavior -- and given she retains her superpowers, she can get very destructive....

The series continues Netflix's path towards an eventual Defenders series, set to team several of the Marvel's "street level" superheroes together, with Jessica joining Daredevil, Iron Fist and Luke Cage -- who debuts in Jessica Jones -- in the line up.

However, Jessica herself is one of Marvel's newer characters, and arguably one of its more niche figures. So before you throw yourself into the entire 13 episode season, WIRED presents an introduction to the reluctant hero and her tragic world.
